Almendro Tree of Life – The Secrets of Nature

The Almendro Tree must be the most impressive of all the jungle giants in Costa Rica’s rainforest. From root to top, this unique tree offers habitats, shelter and nourishment to an incredible number of creatures. Whenever an Almendro goes down, almost the entire community goes down with it, demonstrating the fragility of interdependent systems. A dramatic example of this principle is the Great Green Macaw. Wherever the tree disappears, the parrot no longer is found.

The Biodiversity & Wine Initiative is a partnership between the South African wine industry and the conservation sector. The goals are to minimise the further loss of threatened natural habitat, and to contribute to sustainable wine production, through the adoption of biodiversity guidelines by the South African wine industry.

This is achieved through identifying and enlisting interested producers as members or champions of the initiative, who will implement the biodiversity guidelines, conserve critical ecosystems and incorporate a biodiversity management into their winery activities.

Thanks to the Mazda Wildlife Fund, BWI are able to visit the wine producers on a regular basis by using a vehicle provided by the Fund. This has enabled the BWI extension officers to not only service the wine producers that are members already, but also potential producers in the Western Cape.
